Tamil Nadu: The Chennai High Court has ruled that the Central Government can now enact legislation to provide 50% reservation for OBCs in all-India reservations in medical studies.
Also, the Government of Tamil Nadu has appealed to the Supreme Court that this 50% reservation should be implemented in the current year.
Supreme Court
The Chennai High Court has heard a case filed by political party leaders, including the Tamil Nadu government and the DMK and ADMK, seeking 50% reservation in the All India quota for medical studies in Tamil Nadu.
The court ruled that it could not accept the Medical Council of India's contention that there was no impediment to the provision of reservations in medical courses, and that the Supreme Court should decide 50 per cent reservation for OBCs in medical courses.
Set up a three-sided team
It also said the federal government should pass legislation as soon as possible to provide reservations. The court issued an order of action stating that the OBC section is entitled to the reservation and no one can deny reservation to them and there is no impediment to granting reservation.
In it, the High Court ruled that the health authorities of the Central and State Governments, as well as the Indian Counseling, should set up a three-party committee to discuss the matter and decide within three weeks all the procedures for granting reservations.
As stated by the Government of Tamil Nadu
In this context, the Government of Tamil Nadu has now appealed to the Supreme Court regarding the OBC reservation issue. It is noteworthy that the Tamil Nadu government has stated that the 50 per cent reservation should be implemented in the current year.
